Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico
About 10 minutes away from Villa Lumina, Puerto Escondido is a holiday town that is both colourful and varied. You won´t find the big sterile hotel chains and restaurants. Instead you will find a huge variety of fun both by day and by night for all ages and tastes.
By Night: Puerto has Zicatela Beach (the surfer´s hang out) and the Adoquín, each offering restaurants, bars and dancing.
Zicatela:
Cafecito,
almost an institution in Puerto, great for breakfasts, snacks, juices, ice cappuccinos. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Occasionally has live music.
BarFly,
Recently moved to Zicatela. Famous for good music, daquiries (I haven´t been to this new location)
Sakura:
Sushi on the beach. Sashimi, tempura. Very, very good.
Hotel Inés:
Occasional fish BBQ´s, good fillets etc. Great Happy Hour for cocktails!
Diving classes you can train for the PADI here, initially in the pool and moving on to the sea!
Central Surf:
Great place for shorts, t shirts, surf gear. Also, the place to ask for surfing lessons. Great teachers, you´ll be on the waves whatever your age in no time!
Gelato:
Try the gelato place by Rockaway
Hotel Rockaway:
a funky location for live music poolside.
La Piedra de la Iguana:
late night disco and bar. I have to say, I have never made it there! Cool looking place though.
Santa Fe Hotel:
elegant eating (vegetarian and fish). Luxurious setting, great service and piña coladas.
Casa Babylon:
a great place to hang out, fantastic mojitos, great music and games like backgammon and jenga.
Italian Restaurant el Jardin:
lots of vegetarian options, run by a very friendly family. Great service and food. Love the tempeh burgers!
Maica:
another institution! Live Trova music on the beach with a once famous singer. Patchy but always interesting, the musicians sometimes seem so drunk that they are going to fall over, she has a following! Make sure you pay for your drinks as you order as they will try and overcharge you.
El Sorbo:
Great paella, make sure you order ahead of time as it is made fresh and takes close to an hour..a long time when you are hungry!
Adoquín
Benditos:
arguably the best pizzas I have eaten, even in Italy!
Los Tres Diablos:
bar and food
WipeOutBar:
Loud music and dancing. Great fun for all, dancing on the roof, frozen daquiris.
El Tubo:
an old fashioned beach disco!
Karaoke Bar:
lurid green, Mexican music features strongly, a parallel universe.
New bars open all the time, part of the fun is checking them all out! See TomZap for extra Puerto information.
Outside Puerto Escondido
Mazunte:
The Turtle Museum – a fantastic visit if you are travelling with kids.
Ventanilla (right by Masunte)
Crocodile safari! Take small row boats through the lagoons and see beautiful birds and of course, the crocs!
Iguana farms
On the road between Masunte and Puerto Escondido, look out for the signs, see how they are fed, how they live and grow.
